GUIDELINES FOR SENDING E-MAIL

TO ALL NBCUG MEMBERS

Always-Online, an Internet Service Provider (ISP), provides NBCUG members the capability to send e-mail to over 300 members by addressing their message to nbcug@always-online.com. This is a "closed" e-mail system such that only e-mail from NBCUG members will be accepted. Members sending mail to NBCUG must use their e-mail address that is registered at NBCUG otherwise their mail will be rejected.

Sending e-mail to all members requires one to use good judgement regarding message content. The following guidelines are suggested:

1. DO NOT PUT nbcug@always-online.com in your address book for a virus to seize and send itself to all members! Jot it on a piece of paper!

2. With the exception of Always-Online who sponsors the NBCUG mass-e-mail program, commercial advertising shall NOT be permitted. Advertising your personal PC or similar items is not considered commercial.

3. Profanity and flaming messages are prohibited and can lead to the suspension of an offender from NBCUG's e-mail list.

4. In general, one should not send e-mail to all members that they themselves would find objectionable. Examples might include long lists of jokes, large attachments that take a long time to download, personal messages to an individual that likely would not interest others, virus warnings that have not been checked out and likely to be hoaxes, scams and get-rich-quick schemes and pleas for donations for questionable charities or causes.

5. It is not intended that members be stifled from sending mail to all members. The e-mail should also not be viewed as being solely for NBCUG activity such as announcements, minutes and member lists. Examples of acceptable messages from members might include the following:

NBCUG or SIG Meeting announcements, Minutes, Member lists.

Requests for help regarding PCs, finding a person, locating a store, asking advice,

Announcements, comments about new store openings, good deals and bad deals on computers.

Requests for help from a charitable organization.

Items for sale - Such items need not be computer-related only.

Providing computer advice and tips, tutorials.

NBCUG club surveys.

Meeting handouts from speakers.

Comments about NBCUG meetings, organization, suggestions, etc.

6. Many of NBCUG's members are new to computers and communications and sometimes send out e-mail messages that annoy some members. For example, one might send out an innocent message in all Caps which in e-mail netiquette implies that one is shouting. Members should have patience in these situations and not send flaming messages to the sender.

7. To assure that your e-mail message and possible attachments are sent to members the way you expect, it is always a good idea to first send the message to yourself as a check. By doing this one may see errors, including the need to adjust line lengths to prevent line wraparound. The edited message can then be copy/pasted and resent as a new message to NBCUG.

Please, please do NOT send large or several attachments or embedded graphics to NBCUG that will take a long time to download. If you are using a high-speed service remember that most members are still using 56K modems. Resize large photos to 100kb or less. One way to do this is to download the free version of PHOTO RESIZER that I have posted on the NBCUG website.
